Prenatal Tests

Prenatal screening encompasses a wide range of tests that are routinely performed on all pregnant patients. The following is a list of tests that are provided during the course of the pregnacy.

* denotes optional tests

  • initial testing

    Complete Blood Count

    Blood Type and RH screen

    Rubella Antibody

    Syphilis screen

    Herpes Antibody

    Thyroid screen

    Hepatitis Antibody

    HIV testing

    Pap smear

    Gonorrhea and Chlamydia cultures

    Urinanalysis and culture

Hemoglobin Electrophoresis in patients of high risk groups

Pt's with preexisting conditions may have additional testing

  • 1st & 2nd trimester screening*

1st trimester screening detects 85% of cases of Down's syndrome and involves an ultrasound and a blood test in the hospital. This test has a screen positive rate of 5%. That means that 5 out of 100 women having the test will test positive and will require additional confirmatory testing with either CVS or amniocentesis.

2nd trimester screening detects approximately 80% of cases of Down's syndrome and has the additional utility of testing for trisomy 18 and 13 as well as Neural tube defects. This is a blood test that is performed in the office and has a screen positive rate of 5% as well.

Integrated screening involves combining both of the above and has similar detection rates of 85% but with a lower screen positive rate 1%. That means that utilizing the integrated screen will yield a significantly lower number of positive tests aprroximately 1:100 women.

  • gestational diabetes screen

1 hour glucola is performed between 24-28wks. You will be given a drink (glucola) which you are asked to drink prior to the visit. You will be asked to note down the time and will require a blood draw in the office within 1 hour. This test is a screening test for gestational diabetes. During this blood draw, we will also repeat the blood count and RH antibody screen. In patient's with thyroid disease, thyroid function testing will be repeated.

  • growth scan

This is not a requirement for all patients and is performed on those individuals who are suspected to have either a growth restricted fetus or a large for geatation fetus.

  • GBS screening

This a vaginal and rectal swab that is performed at 35-37wks of gestation. 20% of pregnant patients will test positive for this bacteria and will require antibiotics in labor.

  • NST/AFI

NST is a monitor of the fetal heart rate for approximately 20 minutes and indicates normal fetus if reactive. This test is only utilized in selected patients who are thought to be at risk.

AF is a measurement of amniotic fluid. If amniotic fluid is suspected to be low, the umbilical cord may be at greater risk for compression and as a result may warrant delivery in term pregnancies.

  • Cystic Fibrosis screening*

This test does not detect all cases of cystic fibrosis as only the most common mutations are analyzed. This is an optional test for the general population and highly recommended for high risk populations.
